Rohit Sharma Hints At Future Plans and 2027 ODI World Cup Ambitions

India captain Rohit Sharma, fresh off leading his team to victory in Champions Trophy 2025, has addressed questions surrounding his future in international cricket, particularly his participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Rohit scored match-winning 76 runs off 83 balls in the final versus New Zealand as India won by four wickets.

Rohit also captained India to the title the T20 World Cup in 2024 and retired from the format after lifting the trophy. He has been a cornerstone of the side’s batting lineup in the white-ball cricket for over a decade. However, with the 2027 World Cup still two years away, questions about his longevity are naturally arising.

While Rohit did not rule out the possibility of him playing the ODI World Cup 2027, he is still not sure of his participation and wants to keep the options open.

"It's very hard to say that right now - but I am keeping all my options open. I want to see how well I'm playing - Right now, I'm playing really, really well, and I'm enjoying everything I'm doing with this team, and the team is enjoying my company as well, which is nice - I can't really say 2027, because it's too far, but I'm keeping all my options open," Rohit said as quoted in a interview with the ICC.

The 37-year-old further talked about his emotional connection with the sport and the team that pushes him to keep on playing for India.

"As long as I'm enjoying the sport, I'm enjoying playing the game, doing what I'm doing for this team, I will continue to play. It is something that really makes me happy. There are a lot of things involved, there's so much pride, and the way this team is playing, I don't want to leave this team."
"The way we are playing at this point in time, there is so much joy, so much fun to play with all of them," Rohit stated.

Rohit Sharma Not Retiring from ODIs

Earlier, after winning the Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit squashed all the speculation about his ODI retirement, urging the media to not spread rumours.

For the unversed, several reports suggested that the Hitman might hang up his boots from ODIs irrespective of the result in the final.

"No future plans. Jo ho raha hain, woh chalta jayega (Whatever is happening will keep continuing)," Rohit had said.
"I am not going to retire from this (ODI) format. Going forward, please don't spread rumours."

Rohit will be next seen in action in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, where he will don the Mumbai Indians (MI) jersey.
