Summary

Yashasvi Jaiswal is going strong for India unbeaten on 62 while Karun Nair's dismissal has titled the balance in England's favour at lunch.

Jaiswal scored his 11th Test fifty

India posted 98 runs in the first session of the second Test on day 1 at Edgbaston. However, it looks like England have the upper hand after the session finished.

India scored 98 runs for the loss of two wickets. Yashasvi Jaiswal is batting unbeaten on 62 runs off 69 scoring his 11th Test fifty. With him is skipper Shubman Gill at the other end having just opened his account.

Much like they did on the opening day of the first Test, India lost the wicket of Karun Nair (31 runs off 50 balls) to hand the initiative to the visitors. Previously they lost the wicket of KL Rahul (2 runs off 26 balls).

Yashasvi Jaiswal Standing Strong For India

Yashasvi Jaiswal was lucky to survive a few close calls as was Karun Nair. However, the right-hander could not kick on and was dismissed for the second time in his 30s. England started on with Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse. Woakes was nippy and was getting the ball to seam quite a bit. He was bowling wicket to wicket.

He finally managed to get the wicket of KL Rahul in the ninth over of the Indian innings to give England an early breakthrough. Rahul who was playing close to his body managed to chop one straight on off-stump.

India then made steady progress with Nair adding an 8-run stand for the second wicket with Jaiswal. The right-hander played a few crisp cover drives and looked largely untroubled before he was surprised by one sharp bouncer from Carse.

England skipper Ben Stokes has rotated his bowlers well with he himself bowling five overs giving away 23 runs. Woakes bowled seven boalers giving away just 15 runs and picking up the wicket of Rahul. Carse bowled six overs for just 14 runs. Josh Tongue was the expensive of the lot as he went for 42 runs off his six overs. Jaiswal was severe on him as he fancied playing his shots. England spinner Shoab Bashir bowled just one over before lunch.

India was very close to making it their session but the wicket of Karun Nair has tilted the favour towards England. When the second session resumes, Jaiswal will be the key and Gill needs to partner him well.

Shastri, Gavaskar Baffled To See Bumrah Rested, Kuldeep Missing

Earlier in the game, England won the toss and opted to field first. They went in with the same XI that played the first Test. India made as many as three changes with three changes with Akash Deep coming in for Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy for Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar replacing Sai Kishore. The likes of Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar were baffled by the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav from the second Test.
