India Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal Grabs Career-Best Six-Wicket Haul in County Championship

Yuzvendra Chahal picked up a six-wicket haul for Northamptonshire in the ongoing County Championship match against Derbyshire. Playing at the County Ground in Northampton, Chahal helped bowl Derbyshire out for 377 in the first innings. This is now his best performance in county cricket.

Chahal had already taken four wickets on the previous day. He came back on Day 2 and took the final two wickets of Ben Aitchison and Blair Tickner to complete the six-for. His final figures read 6/118 from 33.2 overs.

This was only his second six-wicket haul in first-class cricket. He recorded a similar feat in 2016 during a Ranji Trophy game for Haryana.

Yuzvendra Chahal Wrecks Derbyshire with His Best-Ever County Spell

Derbyshire had chosen to bat first after winning the toss. Yuzvendra Chahal’s first breakthrough was Harry Came, whom he trapped lbw. Just a few balls later, he got rid of Luis Reece, who was caught close-in at short leg.

In his following over, he sent back Brooke Guest, who edged one behind to the wicketkeeper. Later in the innings, he dismissed Zak Chappell, who had started to look dangerous in the lower order.

Chahal then wrapped up the innings by removing Ben Aitchison and Blair Tickner in quick succession on Day 2. These last two wickets came just when Derbyshire were hoping to push past 400.

Yuzvendra Chahal’s Performance in County Championship

This six-wicket haul is now Chahal’s best performance in county cricket. So far this season, he has taken 10 wickets. Earlier in the 2024 season, he also picked up two five-wicket hauls, one against Derbyshire, where he took 5/45, and another against Leicestershire, with figures of 5/134.

Before joining Northamptonshire, Chahal played for Kent in 2023 and featured in two County Championship games. But it is with Northants that he has found more opportunities in red-ball cricket.
