IPL 2025: "I Barely Slept The Night Before" - Suryakumar Yadav Recalls His Mumbai Indians Debut In IPL

SKY recalls his Mumbai Indians debut

Suryakumar Yadav has been playing for Mumbai Indians (MI) since 2018, and the franchise has played a big part in his growth as a cricketer.

His consistent run as a batter for MI helped him make his India debut across formats, and ultimately he was named India's next T20I skipper after Rohit Sharma won the T20 World Cup title.

SKY has been very vocal about the support he has received from Rohit Sharma in his growth as a cricketer. He and Rohit are the batting pillars of this MI side. Having joined the side in 2018, Yadav has already won two IPL titles with the franchise in 2019 and 2020.

There Was So Much Excitement - SKY On His Mumbai Indians Debut

Interestingly, before being a regular member of the side since 2018, SKY previously joined MI in IPL 2012 and made his debut against Pune Warriors at the Wankhede Stadium. He unfortunately bagged a duck on his debut and it was the only match he played that season.

"I barely slept the night before my debut for Mumbai Indians - went to bed around 4 or 5 in the morning. There was so much excitement. Playing for a franchise brings a different kind of buzz. I was just enjoying the moment, thinking about stepping onto the field for warm-up and as soon as I did, I was already sweating. It felt really good,” Suryakumar said on JioHotstar's special show, The Suryakumar Yadav Experience.

Suryakumar Yadav started opening for MI when he rejoined them in 2018. He scored 512 runs that season for the franchise. He recalled how he was asked to open by the franchise after he didn't open in the first two games.

“In 2018, I didn't expect to open. I didn't in the first two games, but then the team management came to me and said they wanted me to take on that responsibility. I was keen, so I embraced it. From there, it was up to me to make the most of the opportunity. I didn't overthink it. Having played all my cricket in Mumbai, I was familiar with the conditions at Wankhede and the pitches. I just kept playing and practicing. I didn't expect to have a season with 500 runs as my previous seasons never went beyond 200, but this felt different" he added saying in the show.

SKY Has Notched Up 427 Runs In IPL 2025 So Far

Then in 2019 and 2020, he played an important role for the side, helping them to win back-to-back titles. His consistent run finally paved the path for his T20I international debut in 2021, and after the T20 World Cup 2024 title win, he was named India's next T20I skipper.

In this IPL season so far, SKY has notched up 427 runs in 10 games at an average of 61.00 after a circumspect start to the season. Rohit has also scored 240 runs in nine games with two fifties after a string of poor scores to start the season. It is mainly due to Rohit and SKY's form with the bat that MI has climbed up to the third position on the IPL 2025 points table. MI plays against the Rajasthan Royals on Thursday in Jaipur. This is the first meeting between the two sides this season.
