After getting Test captaincy, Shubman Gill could also replace Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain ahead of India's next bilateral ODI series. After his instant success as the Test captain, a couple of journalists posted a post related to the possibility of Gill replacing Rohit as the ODI captain. The said posts from the reporters have got both the players trending on the X on Thursday, July 10.
According to Sports Tak, Gill will lead India in the ODI World Cup 2027 and will take over the reins from Rohit in the future. However, how long the latter can keep up his place and position as ODI leader is still unclear. Another report claims that India's Test captain will lead immediately in the next ODI series that the team will play, which is tentatively in October when they travel Down Under for a three-match ODI series.

Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli aim to play ODI World Cup 2027 event
This speculation has grabbed a lot of eyeballs ever since Rohit opted not to play the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy owing to poor form. It was also his last Test as India captain. However, Rohit went on to lead the team in the Champions Trophy 2025 event and maintained his willingness to still play the format after winning the tournament. It is also said multiple times the veteran is trying to stay as fit as possible for the ODI World Cup 2027 event.

The right-hand batter suffered a heartbreak in the ODI WC 2023 event, where they lost to Australia in the final. Rohit, as well as Virat Kohli, want to avenge that loss by trying to win the ODI WC 2027. However, the duo's international comebacks are delayed due to India's tour of Bangladesh in August being suspended. There are rumors that the BCCI is planning to arrange an ODI series against Sri Lanka in August.
