Former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar was very proud of this young Indian team and its skipper, Shubman Gill, who made a sparkling comeback to level the series against England.

Dilip Vengsarkar, who attended the Mumbai team introduction for the upcoming domestic competition, spoke highly of the Indian Test team and skipper Shubman Gill, who led from the front even in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah during the second Test.

“He did very well as a captain, as a batsman, it was very important that he scored runs so that he can call the shots and he can lead from the front, which is very important and he has done that,” Vengsarkar told the media.

Praise for Shubman Gill’s Leadership and Batting in England from Dilip Vengsarkar

Further, Shubman Gill was highly praised by the legend for his batting in English conditions and how he managed to pull out the win without the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, which was the biggest talking point ahead of the series.

“He is an experienced player. He is a world-class batsman and he showed that in England. Because of the English conditions, everybody was thinking what will happen to the Indian team in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. But these young players have shown that they are capable of doing it and I am very proud of them,” he said during the launch of Mumbai’s Cricketing Season 2025-26.

Vengsarkar on Shubman Gill’s Record Hunt and Team-First Mindset

The Indian skipper, who managed to score 585 runs in the first 4 innings of the series, is well on his way to breaking the all-time record of Sir Donald Bradman, who scored 974 runs in the Ashes 1930. Vengsarkar was highly positive that Shubman Gill will break the record.

“Well, he is in great form and he is an outstanding batsman. I hope he does that. I don’t know whether he will do it, but I am sure that he has an opportunity. He is in great form and he should do it, that’s what I feel,” he said.

Meanwhile, he suggested that Gill put his country before the personal milestone, which he feels is so important and this leads to winning matches.

“But then, what is important is not (get into chasing) personal milestone. Because we are obsessed with personal milestone, which is wrong. The important (point) is to win matches for our country. That is what matters. And the impact of innings or a spell is what matters in the ultimate analysis,” he concluded.
